Saturday, July 31st, 2010 - Gallery in the Garden: Over The Road

Expand the imagination with Sherway Gardens’ current Gallery in the Garden exhibit entitled Over The Road. The acrylic and mixed media paintings by Margaret O’Flanagan-Byerley, Pamela Avril Pols and Catherine Shane featured in this exhibit reach the imagination in a variety of ways. Their diverse and unique paintings are very complimentary to one another and will be on display until August 14, 2010. Call 416-621-1070 or visit www.sherwaygardens.ca for more information.

Mississauga artist Margaret O’Flanagan-Byerley’s work involves the layering of canvas on canvas or collage on canvas. She began her artistic career as a watercolourist and now works primarily in acrylics creating abstracts and semi-abstracts that she says “have allowed me to explore my artistic soul as I haven’t done since I was a child. It is exciting to follow the ideas that seem to come from some uncharted inner source and to see what happens on a canvas.”

For the last 11 years, Margaret has taken lessons at Visual Arts Mississauga and Neilson Park Creative Centre with Bill Biddle, Anne Fullerton, Linda Kemp, Doug Mays, David McKee, Ann Sutton, Tim Packer, Kai Lee McGinnis and Steve Rose. A member of the Purple Studio Painters, she has exhibited work for three consecutive years at Compass Canada and in shows at Royal Lepage, Gallery Streetsville, Neilson Park Creative Centre, Meadowvale Theatre, Lorne Park Library, Riverwood, Art in the Park at Benares House and has shown art as part of the annual garden tour by the Horticultural Society of Mississauga. She has been chosen to display at both the Delta Hotel and Novotel and has finished a commission to create art for the newly remodeled Billiard’s Room in her condo as she did last year for the remodeled Guest Suite.

Brampton artist Pamela Avril Pols’ textured surfaces add another dimension to the images she creates. Born in Leamington, England and emigrated to Canada in 1953, Pamela has always been creative and enjoys both acting and painting. In the 1960s while working as a teacher in Peel Region, she earned a Supervisors Certificate in Art from the Ontario College of Art and then English Honours and Fine Arts degrees from York University. Since her retirement in 1997, she has been studying with Steve Rose, Lila Lewis, Brian Smith, and John Leonard.

Pam is a member of Beaux Arts Brampton, Neilson Park Creative Centre, and The Etobicoke Art Group. She has taken part and exhibited at: Shoppers World / Bramalea City Centre (2005), A two-person show at Neilson Park creative Centre( 2006), Impact Annual Juried Exhibitions at Neilson Park Creative Centre (2008, 2009), Coffee Culture Cafe, Brampton (2009, 2010), 12 Palettes show at Neilson Park Creative Centre (2009), Taking Space (2009), T.G.I.F. again at Neilson Park Creative Centre (2009), Etobicoke Art Group, 45th Annual Juried Exhibition (2009), McMichael Canadian Collection, Progression Exhibition (Dec 2009/ September 2010), V.A.M. 32nd Annual Juried Exhibition (2010), and the Beaux Arts Juried Exhibition (2009, 2010).

Oakville artist Catherine Shane’s world view is slightly topsy-turvy, causing you to look twice to see if you really saw what you thought you did. Following a long career with a telecommunications giant, she pursued her artistic passion and embarked on her “Make Your Walls Laugh” series of imaginative, whimsical and abstract acrylic paintings, utilizing vibrant colours and humour in paintings that tell a story and may encourage a chuckle or two.

Catherine recently joined The Purple Studio Painters, an inspirational group of watercolourist/acrylic painters. She has studied with numerous artist mentors and has also studied the arts at Sheridan College, Oakville Art Society and Neilson Park Creative Centre.

This summer Clay & Paper Theatre presents: The Circus of Dark & Light, a subversive comedy featuring puppets, live music, and special appearances by a human cannonball, a pyrophobic firebreather and a truly elegant ersatz elephant.

Welcome to CIRCUS SCAMALOT, currently on tour with Prime Minister Nobody and under the tiny thumb of Little Big Man. Can a bedraggled bunch of clowns, a cowardly ringmaster and a hard-nosed high wire beauty queen band together to break out of oppression, galvanize hope and take control of their own lives? Come join our unlikely heroes and discover how the magic of community can change the world.

As part of our Puppets without Barriers program which aims to increase accessibility to theatre, we will be offering performances with pre-show touch tours and Integrated Descriptive Dialogue for blind and low-vision audience members.

Most evening performances will also feature a pre-show by our hit bicycle-based theatre troupe; CYCLOPS: Cycling Oriented Puppet Squad. This mobile performance squad takes our unique brand of theatre to the streets; animating and energizing Toronto’s public spaces, promoting active living and drawing attention to urban environmental issues through original bicycle-infused theatre!

Whether on the hunt for retro Laurel table lamps, vintage Manhattan glassware or antique Sevres vases, antiquing at the 39th annual Summer Antiques Show at Sherway Gardens (Hwy 427 and the QEW) is about the fun of the search and the thrill of the find. From high style to shabby chic, shoppers can browse nearly 1.2 kilometres of perfect accent pieces ranging from cozy country quilts to rare Italian artwork. Toronto’s largest antiquing event opens at 10am on Civic Holiday Monday August 2nd and runs through Sunday, August 8th (Monday 10am-6pm; Tuesday-Friday 10am-9pm; Saturday 9:30am-6pm; Sunday 11am-6pm). Add free admission and parking and you can see why this has been Toronto’s favourite antiques show for more than three decades. For more information call 416-621-1070 or visit www.sherwaygardens.ca or www.asinter.com.

“Antiques add a ‘wow factor’ to any home decor”, states show organizer Peter Sutherland. “It’s all about finding the coolest things in the city. For example, Yorkville’s Starr Howard Antiques offer exquisite, one-of-a-kind pieces that allow customers to individualize their homes. People who come to the show are not satisfied with cookie cutter design and decorating that go hand in hand with mass production. We find that our customers have an exacting sense of style and a passion for decorating with flair”.

More than 10,000 antiques and collectibles will be on display throughout Sherway Gardens at the Summer Antiques Sale including folk art from the Maritimes, restored mahogany dining room tables, white-washed cottage furniture, vintage timepieces, armoires from France, ancient coins, pine harvest tables, sideboards, blanket boxes, brass beds, pressed glass and estate jewelry.

For your home, condo or cottage, the Summer Antiques Show offers a world of rare finds and treasures under one roof including:
•	The clean lines of mid-century modern pieces that fit the cool stylings of condo living
•	The golden glow of authentic antique pine furniture that adds warmth to any home
•	Exquisite watercoloured porcelain from stately homes in the English countryside
•	Hand worn woods of carved French country furnishings that fit perfectly with contemporary décor

The Summer Antiques Sale is a great place for the serious and experienced collector and for the novice to find quality antiques and collectibles. The high calibre vendors set aside select pieces throughout the year specifically for the show at Sherway Gardens.

Located on the shores of Lake Huron, art deco furniture and accessories specialist Paul Braybrook brings a wealth of seldom seen stock to the show. Paul’s inventory includes items ranging from Handel and Pairpoint lamps to the incredible work of artist Bjørn Wiinblad.

Siecle Antiques features beautiful things from the French countryside. Provençal-style dressers, wonderful lamps, unusual mirrors and an eclectic array of items both practical and decorative.

Established in 1981, Rumi Antiques & Fine Art is one of Eastern North America's premier galleries specializing in 17th, 18th, 19th, & 20th century antiques and fine art. A member of the Canadian Antiques Dealers Association, Rumi exhibits the highest calibre stock with something to suit all tastes.

Long established Dealers of the Niagara wine region, Brittanic Antiques, bring an assortment of very fine hand–picked furniture and decorative accessories. The woods of the mainly formal furniture range from burled walnut to gorgeous mahogany.

Hip-Hop Karaoke is the prime opportunity for closet MCs to finally grab the mic and bust their favourite raps live on stage with an accompanying DJ and a feel-good, no attitude vibe where the emphasis is placed on having fun. Arrive early to select from hundreds of classic jams and flex your lyrical skill!

King Sunshine (9:30pm – 10:45pm): King Sunshine illuminates disco roots and drops inflections of funk and dance rhythms, reinventing house music and driving the whole fusion over the red line. Imagine nine musicians transformed into one live DJ, mixing their songs together into one continuous seamless set of music. People have described their concerts as deep and moving and 'a powerful, unforgettable, rhythmic experience'. The weather’s always beautiful on the dance floor!

Friday, August 06th, 2010 - You'll Get Used To It! The War Show

Six men enlist for the Second World War seeking glory and honour, but get a whole lot more than they bargained for. Peter Colley's 1975 work traces their trials and tribulations from enlistment through wartime, vividly colourizing a time many only know in black and white. With a mix of laughter, tears and period music, You'll Get Used To It! The War Show uses real stories and characters to highlight the power of love and friendship through tough times.

*Contemplative End-of-Life Care Training

The Contemplative End-of-Life Care Training was developed as part of a larger effort to improve end-of-life care in Canada and beyond.

Over the years, this initiative has brought remarkable teachers and teachings to our institute, (First Nations, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Tibetan Buddhist, Hindu, Psychotherapists and others) representing diverse perspectives and insights into care of the dying.

At ITM, we are committed to our role as a leader in a revolutionary development of human awareness that is transforming how we live, die and relate to others. Our objective is to make dying, a process that is profoundly meaningful for the individual dying and the community supporting them.

*THE CONTEMPLATIVE END OF LIFE CARE TRAINING HAS COMMENCED.

Applications/Registrations for 2011 will be available in the summer.
